ABOUT US

BABAE - pronounced "ba-BAH-eh" - is a not-for-profit organization created in 2002 to help Filipina victims and survivors of violence in the New York / New Jersey metropolitan area. BABAE, which stands for Bridging Assistance Building Advocacy & Empowerment, is also the Tagalog word for "woman."

BABAE's mission is to provide culturally-sensitive case management services referring women and their families to direct service providers (e.g. doctors, lawyers, counselors, etc.) and to raise awareness of violence against Filipinas through community education and advocacy.

Recognizing the link between advocating for systemic change, community organizing, and direct services, BABAE aims to create a voice and safe environment for all Filipinas, including immigrants and American-born Filipinas, and to ensure that women do not become lost in the legal and social service shuffle. An often overlooked and underrepresented population, immigrant Filipinas in the US outnumber their male counterparts by 2 to 1.  Many are separated from their families and traditional social support systems.  BABAE fills a gaping and growing need to provide direct services to this community of women.
